My Climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro

Ever since I was eight, I have always wanted to climb mountains. As I got older, I realized how badly I wanted that dream to become a reality. I knew that mountain climbers had to be in tip-top shape so I began an intense workout routine. I worked out five days a week for two hours at a time. I jogged and did resistance training to get my body prepared for the rigors of mountain climbing.

The body changes physiologically when ones goes up to a high altitude. I wanted to prepare for the change by training at high altitude. I did this for about six years and finally I decided at 27, that it was time to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I also wanted to make sure that I was healthy enough to climb a mountain. I went to my doctor for a full physical examination. After receiving clearance, I decided that it was time to make my dream of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro come true.

When I told my family and friends that I was planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, they thought I was crazy. I did not let their discouraging remarks deter me from living my dream. A couple of months later, I was on my way to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

I had everything that I needed to make it to the top. I had layers of warm clothes, my winter hydration backpack, flashlight, sleeping bag, rain gear and food. I was anxious to get to the top, but I wanted to make sure that I paced myself. I stopped frequently and made sure that I kept myself hydrated. It took me six days to climb the mountain, which is the time that it takes the average person. I will never forget the day we reached the summit. It was one of the best days of my life.
