Richard Bowles pushes his limits relying on a SOURCE DUNE Hydration Pack during his Israel National Trail Run. Richard is not the only professional runner appreciating the pack. Meir Kanner from Kannerun took our SOURCE Dune Backpack for a series of test-runs.
Meir Kanner is an absolute pro, a consultant, researcher and coach in endurance sports, we are very happy to share his opinion on our SOURCE DUNE Hydration Pack. Thanks to Meir! And we wish him many more beautiful runs with the DUNE! Here is the detailed report from his road & field test:
“1. The backpack is examined at two sites
1.1. Long distance road run of 37 km from Kiryat Tivon to Megiddo junction and back. Runtime 3:21 hours, Average tempo 5:26 min/km.
1.2. Field run of 32 km in the Jezreel Valley that combined dirt roads – brown farm soil, gravel – Kishon River route, rocks and rockeries along the route with climbs and descents – Oak Forest in Tivon, Sheikh Abriik Hill, Alexander Zaid’s statue. 3:06 hours runtime. Average tempo 5:50 min/km
2. General Characteristics
2.1. External form – smooth and flowing design. Very good ergonomics. Initial feeling when carrying the pack on your back is “weightlessness.”
2.2. Colors – “Salamander”. Interesting Orange / Black contrasting combination. A real eye catcher. The color is highly visible in daylight and especially with the background of the green fields in the valley. The deep blue color of the bladder emphasizes the designation of the product
2.3. Crossing shoulder straps – ingenious and simple method in which two cross straps embrace the shoulders. Just like carrying a baby carrier in Africa or among the Indians. When loaded with gear it tightens the grip on your shoulders. Closure of the pack in the front is through two flexible high-quality straps on the chest area and above the pelvis. The result is zero movement. In the aspect the pack this case gets an excellent score.
2.4. The quality of the materials
2.4.1. Fabric – Sewing is excellent and very strong. The fabric is delicate and soft to the touch, demonstrating flexibility and strength.
2.4.2. Straps – thin and without unnecessary padding, relatively large and are not noticeable when on your shoulders as they are an integral part of the backpack.
2.4.3. Pouches – two pouches on the sides of the front strap. Their airy elastic fabric allow a roomy interior space but still prevent movement during the run.
2.4.4. Back support – very comfortable, there was no accumulated sweat on my shirt.
2.4.5. Bladder – high-tech and simplicity which is easy to use and simple to operate. The interior film is bacteria repellent and very pleasant to the touch. Polymer is devoid of any “Oil” smell which many plastic products incorporate. Fill with water is very fast, 1.5 liter – about 10 seconds.
2.4.6. Valves – One click and you are connected. Valves do not allow any water leakage at any angle or situation even when removing or connecting the bag or tube. Excellent.
2.4.7. Water tube- long and comfortable, right degree of flexibility. At the end there is a magnet that attaches to the shoulder strap which proved to be very good and adjustable to the runner’s body proportions.
2.4.8. UTA – Universal Tap Adaptor – A smart and brilliant product, really high-tech. Makes it unnecessary to remove the bladder from the bag and allows to fill up with fresh water along the way. Adapter is suitable for all water faucets. Excellent.
2.4.9. Elastic String – hidden in the back for warm clothes or additional equipment, convenient and useful, but requires you to take pack off your back.
2.4.10. Weight – The weight of the bag is not noticeable. One and a half liter of water disappear into the body mass as if it was an integral part of it.
3. Reviews while Running
3.1 Strapping the bag on your back is easy but requires a little practice to ensure cross straps fit correctly. From the moment the straps are fitted on the shoulders, the case “disappears” into the body as if it were part of it.
3.2. Closing the front straps is quick and easy, and thus the bag is fixed to the body, doesn’t move.
3.3. Running – no movement of the back pack, it’s not noticeable at all. One must consider that 1.5 liters of water are not a heavy weight are on our bodies, and that’s the uniqueness of the SOURCE DUNE. The pack’s stability and the fusion with the natural body contour and running is praiseworthy. I tested the ability to drink it during difficult terrain, no problem, easy and simple.
3.4. Drinking the water is measured, the initial expectation is a surge of water fills the throat. Here, too, surprise awaits you. The body’s requirement are taken into account here too and the smart valve lets out a measured amount of water while actively “pumping”. It is much smarter to sip liquid as the valve “forces” you to do, rather than squirting water into your mouth which could cause choking. Definitely liked.
3.5. Pouches – excellent accessibility to energy boosts or mobile phone when needed.
3.6. Bladder size – One and a half liter. During the 37 km road run in 3:21 hours I consumed about a litre of water. A liter and a half is sufficient for the experienced and the amateur runner. Yet, if you require a bigger bladder, you can purchase an original three liters model that fits comfortably into DUNE without any problem.
The SOURCE DUNE is a low tech product that is manufactured using the most advanced high tech. It is suitable for any runner, amateur and professional, that runs for one hour to many hours. It’s Uniqueness is the dynamic design, the sense of weightlessness, being a smart bag and not just a portable water container. The use of a liter and a half water bladder with the possibility of filling it very fast through the UTA without taking the bladder out turns the DUNE into a distinctive and comfortable pack that can be carried for long periods of time.
As a veteran field runner, Ironman and marathon runner, I can’t find a logical reason to run with 5 kg of water on my back. Unnecessary! Very long runs must be meticulously planned, including passing through settlements, water resources (at gas stations, for example), safety and building a circular route so that you not get too far away from the place of departure. Taking these facts into consideration, it is smarter and more sensible to run with less and feel more. Refueling with water can take place every two hours or so … and a rest for a few minutes certainly will not hurt. With the opening of the ultra racing season, it is time to buy a brand new backpack for carrying water.
My recommendation: Run and purchase the SOURCE DUNE hydration pack!
Summarizing the review the SOURCE DUNE hydration pack receives the final score of 9.5″
