Follow the water! That’s what Canyoning is about. Adventurous fun in a unique environment – where you can put your SOURCE Hydration and SOURCE Sandals to great use. We sponsor French Canyoning-professional Laurent Poublan with SOURCE products for his Canyoning tours. Here’s the story.
Canyoning takes you, where floats, rafts and canoes can’t pass. In gorges, canyons, narrow ravines with sculpted walls, steep drops and spectacular waterfalls. These hidden landscapes inside a canyon are accessible only by foot – and it is to be discovered only with professional guidance and excellent gear and equipment.
Access to the inaccessible
The fun in Canyoning can be compared to an adventure-ride in a water-park – just with a difference that there is no red button to stop the water from coming down on you. It’s dangerous terrain. Escaping a canyon going up the walls is often impossible. The way down is the only way to go. By walking, by climbing, by rappelling, sometimes by swimming, diving or sliding into pools and basins.
In this complex environment, techniques of mountaineering and abseiling are required, knowledge of the powers and ways of whitewater is a must. It takes a lot of experience. But with proper guideance, it feels as simple and fun as a ride in a water-park.
With proper guidance: compare it to the most exciting ride in a water-park
Canyoning – or Canyoneering, as it is called in the US – was only invented as a sports of its own some 20 years ago. And it has not been 20 years of pure fun. Tragic accidents happened, even in guided tours. Today, more and more regulations and rules are in place concerning Canyoning-licenses. Proper gear – also proper hydration, even though you’re in the water all day – is a must.
On Canyoning-pro Laurent Poublans website it says: “For 16 years he didn’t get out of his Neoprene wet-suit, discovering canyons in and outside of France.” He’s the co-founder of the International Canyoning Organisation (ICOPro) and he recently started a whole new trend: Winter-Canyoning in ice, climbing frozen waterfalls.
Laurent runs the Canyoning Center of the Pyrennées and he takes groups of 4-8 people on tours, showing them his secret spots in the canyons of the Pyrennées. We equip his tours with SOURCE products. Try it yourself, when you get a chance. But only do it with care and proper gear. It is a beautiful, but dangerous place to go…
